Childrens Passports - can you renew them once you have your visa, as we have 10 year ones and they have five year ones?

Hi,

I understand from our agents that submitting an application will result in a 3 year wait before they are processed at the moment.  Given childrens passports are 5 years, unlike adults which are 10 years, this could mean that by the time we get the visa we only have a year left on the childrens passports!  As much as I woould like to go immediately we would need to validate the visa and then sort things out here before we can move.  No point doing it before the visa is accepted!  So, does anyone know if you are allowed to renew a childs passport, and if it will effect the visa in any way?

Am very confused :-(

You can renew yours or children's passports at any time. If you renew the passport before the visa is finalised, you are required to send the new passport number to the Australian Government (DIAC). Apparently there is a form to complete which can be found on the DIAC web site or your agent should be able to provide this. If a new passport is required after the visa is finalised, then you can still travel to Australia, but bring the old passport with you, along with the new one (I have been told that you should also bring along the visa grant letter). Once you get to Australia a visa label can be put into the new passport (you can do this by bringing your new passport to Australian Immigration Offices). I hope this helps. Catherine
