Get Me Downunder

The Adventure Starts Here

Visiting Brisbane/Sunshine Coast on a 'Recce' in May 2010

Hello all,

I'm heading over to Brisbane and Sunshine Coast for 4th May - 23rd May scouting for a job in Marketing/Management particularly in hospitality and Airport/airline industries - but willing to consider all suitable challenging opportunities. I'd like to know if any of you have possible networking or contacts that I might pursue and ideally put in place before I depart. I just feel being out there will make it easy to get an employer to sponsor me if i'm out there. (I'm 46, with wife, 2 children and my brother is sponsoring me on a 475 visa but at the moment that is likely to take up to 24 months!)

Hi Fergal
On the Sunshine Coast we have a business network to support new relocatees (including migration agent, recruitment agent etc) let me know If I can put you in contact with these people to assist you?
Anne
Thank you for this Anne. This is most kind of you. I would be happy to meet this business network.
I've already arranged to meet Maurice Holland of the Hyatt Coolum so that is the first one organised!
Looking forward to your reply. Fergal

Hi Fergal
On the 4th May the network is holding a business networking breakfast. The local Economic Development Manager will be outlining the Sunshine Coast Council's Economic Initiative to attract national & international businesses to our region. It is planned to have a number of business owners & representatives at this function.
Would you like to attend? Where are you coming from?

Anne
thanks anne. that sounds interesting. I'm flying in from Ireland late on 4th so will miss it. I am going to the coast from 12th and would be interested in meeting any potential good leads then if it suited? rgds. Fergal

Hi Fergal

AM not a placemnt agent, and not a member of Anne's group. I do own an internet company and was in the Travel game for many years. I figure that apart from the Hyatt Coolum , The Twin Waters Novotel , might be the only other organisation in the Hospitality field which might consider a person of your background and skills levels. There are a number of Holiday Apartment buildings on the SUnshine Coast, but the are mostly managed by people who purchase the management rights outright in the range of Millions of AUD $.

A lot of large hospitality places are licensed clubs which act as pub, club, cafe, restaurant and gambling outlets. These are difficult to get into and turnover in staff can be high.

The AIrline industry on the Sunshine Coast is very small and basically an airport say like Leeds Bradford, they are serviced from Brisbane in terms of upper management and marketing. They have staff there, but not of the experience or qualifications you might hold.

I am not trying to be negative, but am trying to ensure you perhaps spread your net a little wider than the Sunshine Coast, perhaps Brisbane or the Gold Coast where the hospitality industry and AIrline companies have regional or head offices.

I wish you the best in your endeavours, just stay out of real estate it is a horrid game.

Regards
Walter
Thank you kindly Walter. Appreciate you taking time out to assist with much valued advice.

I will be in Brisbane for 2 of the 3 weeks i'm in Oz in May and realise the challenge of trying to obtain a position in SC rather than Brisbane. I am versitile so believe I'll be able to apply my skills to a wide sector, beyond hospitality and transport... and I'm motivated by the tough challenge ahead of me!

I will be considering the GC but feel that it might not be the best place for my wife and 2 kids to live - and we prefer the relaxed.Walter De Angeli said:
