Get Me Downunder

The Adventure Starts Here

ok, so the process is underway to get down under, but i'm undecided as to wether to go to Sydney or to new zealand!

I want decent wether and a good outdoor life style with opportunities to meet paople as i will be coming out on my own.

I'll be coming out on a probably 4 year business visa doing nursing, and still have a mortgage in the uk so i unfortunatly can't rally travel and will have to stay put in one place for a while to make sure i have the money to pay for stuff back in the UK.

Any advice, stories, experiences, job advice will be much appriciated!!!

thanks

heather

Hi Hev

I'm going to NZ basically because of my age (48) but I do know that if you go to NZ then after 2 years when you get PR you automatically get PR for OZ too.
I also think that as for the funds you'll need to earn to pay the things back here in Uk then OZ might well be your best bet, unless you decide to sell up and make a permanent move, I personally have no intention of returning to these shores once I've left !
Finally, you don't need a visa at first to go to NZ as you can stay there for 6 mths just on your passport and spend time searching for work and then apply for a visa

Hope that helps

Hi Heather, had you ever considered anywhere else in Australia? Check out www.southaustralia.com - we have a bit of everything here. Nice lifestyle, best restuarants, friendly people, everything is close the beach, the hills, lower cost of living than the eastern states of Australia making it more affordable and family friendly. Do a bit of research because when you say good outdoor life style and opportunities to meet people I know South Australia can fit the bill!!

Cheers

Hi Phil, you say that with NZ PR you automatically get PR for OZ, I thought that this was not the case? Do you know for certain, or does anyone else on here know?

I have re checked and as I read the rules only NZ passport holders can do this, ie NZ citizens

Hi Michael
So tell me then why New Zealand is called and has always been known as "the back door into Australia"

In reply to your comment about being a passport holder, I would imagine that once you've got PR = Permenant Residency in NZ, you might well be eligible to apply for a NZ passport and if this is so then there's your answer, but then again maybe not a lot of people do go on to OZ because after being in NZ for 2-3 yrs they decide to stay because they like it there and they've got too good a circle of friends to give it up and start again in OZ, who knows eh ???

Hi Phil, have a look at the rules of the "Trans Tasman Agreement" a lot changed in 2001. You have to be an NZ citizen not just have permanent residency, there is a difference.
After being PR in NZ for 5 years you can apply for NZ citizenship (i.e. passport), once this is obtained you can live in OZ. So yes it works but then you need to apply for OZ PR to obtain any benefits. It's designed to allow NZ and OZ citizens to live and work in each others countries, the key word being "citizens".
Yes it used to work years ago but they got wise to this, no point getting angry, this is what the law states.

Who said anything about being angry, I certainly didn't ??????

You've basically agreed with what I have said just the fact that it takes a little longer to complete that's all, but it is still possible to do if required !!!!!

I just felt that I had urinated on your summer fruits! Yes it is possible and takes around 7 years start to finish, if you go to Oz via the NZ route, not two years that you said you immagined to get an NZ passport.
I always think its best to know the facts at the outset then there are no nasty surpprises further down the road? Who knows you may love NZ and decide to stay, as you say many people do. And lets face it, its got to be better than the UK?

No probs Michael they weren't my fruits anyway lol

I got no immediate intention of going to OZ, only to visit my cousins at a later date, my first step is to get into NZ and settle there with NO time scale as to the next step if at all.

Appreciate your input anyway, best of luck in what you're looking to do.

No worries as we say down here! NZ is great and sometimes a better option for people, taxation is not as high as Oz for one thing. And Oz is a possibility in the future, provided the buggers don't alter the rules again!
So good luck and get moving on the application, its amazing how time slips away!
