I think you're right, Ken... Wikipedia's definition was also a Sucker Punch.... which also sounds quite like something to steer clear of!

I think I read the same news report as you did. I spent ages thinking about it but never did figure out exactly what a king hit would be. Best avoided though.

Hi Mhorag, When we moved to Oz in 2006, we used Par Air services. I would highly recommend them as they were very professional and caring (we had two very nervous cats!) Plus we had to change dates at the last minute and they were very accommodatin…

Happy Australia Day!!

Today I celebrated my first Australia Day as an Aussie…. and I felt immensely proud to raise up the Australian flag (ok – it was a cheap hand-held one from the Dollar Tree… and it was actually attached to my esky – not raised up high on a pole) BUT the point is, I felt pretty darn ‘true blue’ as I knocked back the amber nectar with my nearest and dearest on the beach.

The science of the surf…

OK, going by that title, you would be mistaken for thinking that I’m some sort of ocean expert/marine specialist…

…. but obviously I’m not.

However, I have just been talking to someone who is very knowledgeable about that sort of thing, and I felt it was of utmost importance to deliver the information to you!

I have just this minute come back from watching my 12 year old son battle with the surf whilst he was on one of his weekly school ’surf skills’ lessons at one of our local… Continue

Sunshine Coast Bush Fire...

A couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night, I had just donned my pyjamas and removed my contact lenses in favour of my thick and unattractive glasses, when the evening suddenly turned from a comfy night in front of the TV, to an action packed adrenaline rush of madness.

No sooner had I got the children in their beds, than I received several text messages from my friends… telling me to look out of my window… So once I had unpacked the dishwasher, clipped my toenails and organised the washing for… Continue

Australian phrases…

The reason I started writing my book (and consequently a blog) came glaringly apparant again this week – when I was once again faced with two new phrases that made me question my own sanity.

Phrase one..

The first one wasn’t too much of a mind-boggler… here was the context:

“Due to a king tide, the sailing trip had been delayed”

Nothing too weird about that – you can understand that the ‘king’ bit means ‘large’.

But then came another news report…

“The man suffer… Continue

Christmas in July

Ho, Ho, Ho… Merrrry Christmas!

Yep, I’m at it again, going completely loopy…. you may think?

But actually there is another phenomenon that you Brits need to know about – before you leave the shores of Blighty.

Christmas in July.

No, I’m not making it up, it is an actual bona fide tradition that the Aussies do. And to be quite honest, after I had finished mocking it for being utterly ridiculous, I realised it makes total sense.

Imagine Christmas day, everyone has been out for a… Continue

Thanks again very helpful, really clearing up questions we don't know the answer too. Only two months to go counting the days. I'm sure we will have more questions as the days go by. Thanks again.

I impressed with this level of service from just buying your book. Rosie my wife has just finished it and it's given us lots to talk about, we have just accepted an offer on our house so thing really starting to happen. Thanks for the apartment info I have just emailed them. Sorry to bother you with another question but schools. Do we just land and walk into a school to enroll or should we be contacting schools now, it's a bit difficult as we don't know where we are going to be living. 2 of our children are 8 and 16 the 16 year old has just finished GCSE this week. It's funny as soon as one major issue is resolved eg. the house, we find something to replace it with. Still this is what we wanted a bit of excitment back inour lives. Thanks again for your help. Let me know if I need to buy another copy of your book to cover the cost of this information. All the best, by the way it's 24 oC here at the moment typical, we are moving away for better weather then the UK inproves. Regards Richard
