We are an 18th century Living History group. Our main area of interest is in the New World and our period is 1680-1760. But we also research this period in Europe and the British Isles.
We chose to emulate the New World colonial lifestyle because (a) there were more nationalities in the New World at this time, (b) it enables us to choose an earlier period, (c) we have more choices of personas/characters to choose from and a larger choice of trades and skills, (d) this… Continue

Spent the morning at the Down Under Live show in London. Boy, it was busy! If you're heading there tomorrow, you're sure to get all the info you could possibly need if you're thinking of emigrating to Oz or NZ.
Really enjoyed it, and we've been given a glimmer of hope re our dream of making the move ourselves.

Today I celebrated my first Australia Day as an Aussie…. and I felt immensely proud to raise up the Australian flag (ok – it was a cheap hand-held one from the Dollar Tree… and it was actually attached to my esky – not raised up high on a pole) BUT the point is, I felt pretty darn ‘true blue’ as I knocked back the amber nectar with my nearest and dearest on the beach.
We all had a great day floating about on giant inflatable thongs,… Continue

Thanks to everyone on this site that offered information and help, this really is a goldmine of info and tips for anyone thinking of or being in the process of immigrating. After lots of emotionial set backs, and lots of time (approx 2 years) that's us finally off to Brisbane. Only a week and a half to go. Still trying to organise paperwork side of things. I'm glad that we haven't sold our house, eventually we managed to get a lovely family who have taken a years rental with the good chance of… Continue

I thank everyone for the useful advice I have been given, I shall be going to London this weekend to the emigrate show, to try and obtain state/employer sponsorship. I can't wait any longer for the proposed changes, I shall be leaving the military at the end of the year after 22 years service, and need to secure my future for my family. The last thing I want to do is set up home in the UK only to receive my visa a few months later.

Just wondered if anyone knows much about the recent changes happening to the visa process. My husband is waiting for his practical assessment for plumbing and the date was originally Feb but has now moved to June. I wondered if anyone knew why this had changed and how long after that does it take to get the applicaiton lodged ? I think everything is a little unknown at present due to the changes but is anyone aware of any real timeframe from now on, ie how long is the wait… Continue

Hi I'm new on this site. My partner and I want to move to Oz with our 2 daughters but we have no idea where to start! My partner is on the skilled worker list and we have enough points. After looking at countless websites we are really confused by it all. Can anyone help and suggest where we go next?

Well, we've booked up to go to the Leeds event and get as much info on moving the finances, moving the pets, moving companies and everything else.
With the house nearly done, just to get the joiner in to fit a couple of replacement doors, we should be on the market in February and then it's just a case of waiting until sold. Biggest problem are the cats, 3 of them, 2 of which are quite old, one is twenty this year and the other is about 18. Depending on what the vet says they may not… Continue

I put my 175 skilled migrant visa application in, in October 2008, still patiently waiting. I have heard that the priorities are going to change again, does anybody know when, I was told that they were going to change at the end of last year. I don't know wether to carry on waiting or try for state/ employer sponsorship.

we are attending a seminar in leeds this sunday which looks to be very interestin.
Entry is free and there are talks on the new visa changes and general relocation. You can also have one on one chats with migration experts about which visa is right for you and there are people there to talk to about banks, money and jobs.
I hope its as interesting as it looks.

Just to let everyone know there is a new series starting on Channel 4 at 8pm tonight that may be worth a look: "Property Guru Phil Spencer embarks on what feels like a blatant advert for the Australian Tourist Board in this new series, which helps out rain-soaked Brits wanting to start a new life in the land of sun, sand, sea and surf. To no one's surprise, his cliche-drenched searches uncover a lot more bricks for your buck in this opener but he's also grappling with people who want the dream,… Continue

Don't know if any of you are watching the series 'Wanted Down Under' on BBC1 weekday mornings, but i find it really frustrating when they make it look like a flip of a flag decides wether you move to Oz or not!!! I watch it everyday and also have watched all past years series too, when the one lady was a nurse it really interested me. The work out there looks fantastic, they made it sound very appealing and that jobs are very easy to come by....great!!! But what they're… Continue
