Happy Australia Day!!

Today I celebrated my first Australia Day as an Aussie…. and I felt immensely proud to raise up the Australian flag (ok – it was a cheap hand-held one from the Dollar Tree… and it was actually attached to my esky – not raised up high on a pole) BUT the point is, I felt pretty darn ‘true blue’ as I knocked back the amber nectar with my nearest and dearest on the beach.

We all had a great day floating about on giant inflatable thongs,… Continue

The science of the surf…

OK, going by that title, you would be mistaken for thinking that I’m some sort of ocean expert/marine specialist…

…. but obviously I’m not.

However, I have just been talking to someone who is very knowledgeable about that sort of thing, and I felt it was of utmost importance to deliver the information to you!

I have just this minute come back from watching my 12 year old son battle with the surf whilst he was on one of his weekly school ’surf… Continue

Sunshine Coast Bush Fire...

A couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night, I had just donned my pyjamas and removed my contact lenses in favour of my thick and unattractive glasses, when the evening suddenly turned from a comfy night in front of the TV, to an action packed adrenaline rush of madness.

No sooner had I got the children in their beds, than I received several text messages from my friends… telling me to look out of my window… So once I had unpacked the dishwasher, clipped my toenails and organised the… Continue

Mother’s Day in MAY!

This blog is dedicated to all the mothers of children who are living over here in Oz….

Please don’t feel rejected by your heartless children on Mothers Day back in March, when your gift or card didn’t arrive… it’s simply because the UK and Australia celebrate this occasion on different days.

So we are sorry that you sat gazing at the letterbox, awaiting the gentle landing of your Mothering Sunday card onto the hall mat…

… or if you watched eagerly as the… Continue

Australia's frequent festivals

Australia is host to many different festivals and carnivals - probably the most famous being Sydney’s flamboyant Mardi Gras and Melbourne’s International Comedy Festival, to name just a few.

But last week, we attended Australia’s leading regional Food and Wine Festival in Noosa.

Although I love great food, and I have definitely be known to partake in the odd bottle of wine or three, the reason why we decided to check this festival out was for the live… Continue

Off the beaten track....

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

The Sunshine Coast is renowned for its fantastic beaches and its simple, laid-back way of life – but that’s not all that it has to offer. So taking the time to find some other hidden jewels really is worth the one hour drive north of Brisbane.

Along the Bruce Highway, swing a left at the Glasshouse Mountains Tourist Drive (#24) - now also known as the Steve Irwin Way - not only is the Crocodile Hunters Zoo along this road, but… Continue

Viva la visa!

For many of us, the thought of moving overseas is pretty daunting. When you factor in the whole ’selling up’ process; looking for a new place to settle; finding new employment; searching for the right school.

Then there’s the worry of - will the dog be OK on the flight? will the kids be OK on the flight? will we be able to cope in the heat? will we be attacked by all those dreadful creatures? will the kids settle? what shoes shall I wear to go… Continue

How Ironic....

So after all the many months (actually, years) of research, interviews, liasing with government types and tracking/hunting down a publisher who was actually going to give me a ‘fair go’….. my book was released this week!

How utterly ironic then, that I have had to recover from jet-lag in the same week…..

I have been waiting for this moment ever since I first arrived in Oz and got wholly perplexed with the Medicare system and it’s bulk-billing-thingy and after taking the… Continue
