Get Me Downunder

The Adventure Starts Here

I have quite a bit of debt.. i am worried about whether they will let me into Australia if my financial status is very poor and if i have zero credit rating here... I am moving to Melbourne on a spouse visa. Does anybody know if immigration look into your money or financial situation.... i am using a debt management company presently. Any advice greatly received or where to obtain information about this annoymously, Thanks.

As I understand it, it is purely because it is the Australian's only way of checking identity and some form of financial history - it is intended to give some perspective and means they can see you've held an account before.

It is most used for helping with loans or finance for houses. You can open an account before you leave but best to talk to CBA about this.

Hi Claire

I'm 100% certain that Experian etc do not supply UK credit ratings to Australian banks etc. The advice I've had is to bring along bank statements, mortgage details etc so they can process any financial info

Hi Clare

Sorry to hear about this. It may or may not be helpful to know that Australian banks, finance companies etc do not take information from UK credit agencies so your credit history here does not come into account. Immigration are usually more interested in character references and also whether or not you are past the points requirement.
