The Adventure Starts Here

Migration with a child with Autism

Let me explain our circumstances.....

Me and my wife are both 36 years of age, we have two boys, one 4 years old, the other 2 years old.

My wife now works part time as a nursing auxiliary, while I am an I.T. Professional (.NET Technologies on the skills shortage list). From several on-line assessments and speaking to migration experts at the recent expo at Earl's court it appears that we would have enough points to migrate to Perth, Western Australia. This has always been a dream!

However since our initial research our youngest child has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). His main symptoms at this stage are lack of speech and communication skills. Apart from that he is a very affection, fun loving lad. He is currently attending a pre-school for children with communication difficulties. What affect does this have on our potential application? Is this likely to make us unfavorable applicants for a general skills or long term temp visa?

My wife is also concerned what provision there would be in Australia for children with ASD? Would we need to pay for treatment / schooling? What are facilities like? We really are in the dark on this, and cannot find much information on the Internet about ASD and Australian migration. Who would be able to advise us further, or are we wasting our time in pursuit of this dream?

Hoping you can help.

Is there any update on your application? It would be interesting for me to find out what the outcome is for you, as we are in a very similar situation. We are going to the expo in London at the end of this month, so will be getting as much info as we can on whatever options might be available to us. Our son Jack is 8 and has ASD. He goes to a special school here. We also have two other children.

this query of my has recently appeared in the last oz & nz magazine with a reply. Also spoke to an agent who advised to get our son placed on the asd spectrum before continuing. Our son is under going 6 months of assessments after which we will see where we are.

I would be interested to know how you get on as we also have a son with ASD, and are also hoping to emigrate to Perth. Good luck x
