Get Me Downunder

The Adventure Starts Here

After a long wait I have just been awarded my contributory parents visa and can't wait to get out to Mackay to join my daughter and her little family.

I am an experienced Secretary/PA. Does anyone out there have any useful thoughts or experience on lining up work apart from the usual contacting agencies and scouring the internet?

Is there anyone out there in the Mackay area who might be able to offer some first hand advice?

Things are going to be difficult to start but it would be good to know I could get things in motion!

Thanks to you all!

Hi Gilly
My ex-sis in law, her hubby and 3 kids have been in Mackay since September. He is on a 457 visa. He tells me there are still jobs there. My son is currently in Perth and is struggling to get a job (he is 18 and on a WHV), i've told him to get his butt up to Mackay (even though its thousands of miles away) and stay with his aunty - they have told me there are quite a few jobs dotted about. Rental is expensive there though!!!
Good luck!

Hi Gilly
I`m so happy for you but also very envious. I applied for a Contributory Parent Visa about 6 months ago now, and still not heard a thing. How long did you have to wait from first applying.

That's a tough one Gilly. But if you have a place to stay it might be worth just taking the plunge. I think in the end most employers want a face to face even if they have had a phone interview.
Let me know what you decide.
Good luck!

Have already applied to a couple of solicitors and have two other job apps to complete. I wonder whether a potential employer would interview via the telephone or maybe Skype.

Recruitment sites and local papers are covered - trying to decide just how risky it is to go out before getting something lined up.

Hi Gilly,
What kind of places are you looking at the moment?
I am sure you know all the recruitment sites.
Do you have access to the local papers online?
