Less than 2 weeks to go & the to-do list doesn't seem to be getting any shorter!!! ;-)
Just sorting out insurance at the moment. I have citizenship, my husband has permanent residency through a spouse visa, but our little girl will be on a 12 month holiday visa until I have the total 2 years on my passport to entitle her to citizenship by descent (hopefully 6 months in).
Do we go for 1-way travel insurance with a buffer of 21 days when we arrive to set up any… Continue

I'm looking for some advise on exchanging money we have sold our house and there a resonable amount of money to exchange, I have been speaking to a company called FC exchange, who will exchange to currency at the market rate today $1.98 but the banks want to charge 1 - 2% which as the sum is quite large works out to be a lot of money. Has any one used FC Exchange. I don't want to hand over our life saving to a complete stranger over the phone without someone having used them. We leave a week on… Continue

We have had our visas since Feb 08 and they are due to expire in Feb 10. I am a nurse and have a job held for me until then in Subiaco, Perth. Our problem is that of the current housing market, in that our house is now worth a lot less than it was a year ago and to sell it at the moment means that things would be very tight for us in Oz. We have heard people talking of going out to Oz for a short holiday to validate their visas. Can any one tell us if just the visa holder or all… Continue

I would like to ask if anyone has any advice on taking a Miele washing machine to Oz from the UK. Our machine was very expensive and works wonderfully and it just seems an awful waste to sell it here only to have to buy another when we get there. We are unsure if there are electrical issues,
Any advice would be appreciated,

Not only is the value of the house lower than we had hoped but also the £/$ exchange rate is now under $2.
We could afford to take a loss on one or the other but not both.
It's unlikely that we'll be making a move til February anyway in relation to putting the house on the market so hopefully things will have picked up by then.

We submitted our 175 visa in February 2009
In March we found out we were on the CSL list, phew !
However, big silence ever since..... 7 months and counting.
We were thinking of converting this to a 176 state sponsored visa thinking the processing time will be less
Does anyone know:
1. Is it easy to use the same information for 176 as 175 and convert ?
2. Is it worth doing now we are 7 months into "the wait"… Continue

The sun has been shining down on Sydneysiders, with a temperature of 22 degrees today. The summer clothing was pulled from the back of closets around the City and given a well earned airing. But will it last and should we tempt fate by packing away the winter woollies and Ugg boots? Well, we've been advised it could reach 28 degrees tomorrow! The beaches will be mobbed, and there'll be a mad rush on sunscreen. The boogie boards will be dusted off and the buckets and shovels retrieved from the… Continue

Today, at the Annual Sun Herald City 2 Surf race, 75,000 runners slogged (and some are still at it as I write this)along the roads of Sydney today, from Hyde Park in Sydney's CBD 14 Kilometres to the finish at Bondi Beach.
The sun shone and the race saw many colourful characters dressed up as celebs such as Michael Jackson and Superman.
The winner of the mens' race was Michael Shelley (runner up last year) , a 25 year old from the Gold Coast in Queensland, ran the race in… Continue

The UK’s number one magazine for Down Under – Australia & New Zealand – is set to launch in Ireland in October.
The magazine, which has won a number of awards from UK industry body the PPA, already serves the audience of travellers and migrants to Australasia from the UK, and is now looking to cater for the thousands of Irish people making the trip down under.
It is estimated that just under 10% of the population of Australia claim Irish descent, (around 1.8 million) with over… Continue

I have been granted a 175 permanent residency visa so my nursing skills have already been assessed by the ANMC. My question is has anybody out there been through the process of getting registered with the Queensland nursing council. I have read on their website that you can request to get your details sent over from the ANMC, does this… Continue
