Been a bit hectic over the last few weeks but we thought we'd do one last wee update. Continue
Well, the house sale went through without too many problems. The people behind our buyers were playing silly buggers which meant we had to put a deadline on the conclusions so we could give Crown a definite date…

Just a quick note to let you all know ...... we have accepted an offer on the house, only slightly under our ideal acceptable price. Potential entry date 26th November, but we've asked for an extra 2 weeks but we might not get that.
So now the panic begins .... Cat quarantine and travel .... have a whisky ... container .... have a… Continue

We have finally finished the house and it is on the market.
The Home Report we needed to purchase as part of the sale gave the house a clean bill of health and gave us a valuation on the property, lower than we'd hoped but hey ho we'll use that as the lowest figure we'll accept.
We've got quotes for shipping the cats across, scary stuff, it's going to cost… Continue

My passport is up in 2011 and I was thinking I'd be better and cheaper off renewing it here before heading out to Oz.
One question I have is does my visa tag get transferred across into the new passport, or do I just travel with the two of them if going in and out of Oz?

Just had a thought this morning (rare I know) while sitting drinking coffee in the conservatory looking out at a dark, cold Scotland and wishing I was in Brisbane.
We have our permanent resident visas good up until 2013. Now we plan to move this year, probably August, but my thought was - is there some criteria we need to fulfil to keep the visa or qualify for citizenship. I remember reading something yonks ago about having to live for 24 months and work for 12 months but can't… Continue

Well, we've booked up to go to the Leeds event and get as much info on moving the finances, moving the pets, moving companies and everything else.
With the house nearly done, just to get the joiner in to fit a couple of replacement doors, we should be on the market in February and then it's just a case of waiting until sold. Biggest problem are the cats, 3 of them, 2 of which are quite old, one is twenty this year and the other is about 18. Depending on what the vet says they may not… Continue

Hit a bit of a problem with the job I previously mentioned. It's not completely fallen through but an issue has popped up which may mean I need to body swerve the offer for a while.
While this is working itself out, can anyone recommend an agency which will place people still in the UK with employers in Australia. I've been applying for jobs in Oz but not getting very far as obviously the employers want someone already there to give the job to.
Thanks in advance.

Well, there you go ... after all the disappointment over the house price and plumetting exchange rate, a contact I made in Oz has popped up and offered me a permanent job. So, we're currently in the middle of negotiating it all but essentially I'd be going over in January and working on a client site in Sydney which means I'd be back to living out of a hotel but that means they'd be picking up the tab for food, accomodation etc.
The wife would stay here to finish off the remaining… Continue

Not only is the value of the house lower than we had hoped but also the £/$ exchange rate is now under $2.
We could afford to take a loss on one or the other but not both.
It's unlikely that we'll be making a move til February anyway in relation to putting the house on the market so hopefully things will have picked up by then.

Well, we got the house valued last week .. and were shocked to find that it was worth £20k less than what we'd marked as our lower limit.
Not that it will stop the move, but it makes things a bit harder and cash a bit tighter.
Just need to get that lottery win instead.

Was stunned and pleasantly surprised when the wife showed me the latest magazine and said my blog post was in it ...
If I'd know it'd be published I'd have polished it up a bit.
Anyway, work progressing on the house. Got a plasterer coming at the beginning of August to do some touch up and skimming work. A couple of windfalls have left us a bit flush so we'll be able to buy the wooden flooring for the kitchen sooner than expected so that will be finished… Continue

The adventure is all over .... back in UK. Only took one encounter with a Heathrow Airport worker for me to want to get on the plane straight back out. It really hits you just how bad the UK has become once you've been away for 5 weeks. So well done Maggie Thatcher, John Major, Tony Blair, and Gordon Brown for ripping the heart out of this country.
Upcoming plans, will be to get the work on the house finished, mainly the ceiling in the hall and flooring for the… Continue

Day 1 – Edinburgh -> Singapore
Flight delayed by 90 minutes but didn't cause any issues as we had plenty of time. Transit to Heathrow T4 was easy and the Singapore flight left about 30 minutes late.
Encountered a couple of guys who were taking pictures of everything and I mean everything including the baggage reclaim screen which had the flight number on it.
Arrived sweaty and manky after flight. Travel to hotel was pretty easy, but the new case from Tesco is… Continue

Yes, 4 days til we fly out.
Everything other than buying some grossly over priced data roaming for the iPhone is organised, car hire, internal flights ......
Can I just say "WOO" and add a "HOO" ....
Given the fact I have just read this story I think I might just not bother coming back to this country.
12 years of Labour has completely wrecked my country and I have no… Continue

I tend not to use photo albums on social networking sites, too little protection on most of them, so I'm posting a link to my personal favourites site in case anybody is remotely interested.
Pics from our trip to Australia will be going in there during and after the trip.

The time to head out for a recce is approaching fast:
Driving licenses have all been updated to the new UK picture version.
The amount of money we will have in cash with us is calculated and we know when we need to get in and convert £ into Australian and Singapore $. Exchange rate is pants just now though.
Employment agencies have been contacted and are able to see me when we arrive
Flickr (http://www.flickr.com) meetup is already arranged for Anzac Day in… Continue

6 weeks today until we head to Australia for the reconnaissance/holiday.
I'm completely bored with everything around me, the weather, the neds (chavs), the constant removing of bottles from the garden because people are too stupid and lazy to put them in a bin, Gordon Brown, and a host of other things.
It just seems that the immediacy of the trip has brought into focus just how crappy this country is now. Not a bad record for the last few governments (Tory and Labour) ,… Continue

We've just got our Migrant Banking account set up and the forms all signed ready to return to the bank and then we can move the cash for our holiday/reconnaissance trip.
I emailed 3 Australian banks, NAB, Commbank, and ANZ, and sat back and waited.
NAB replied within hours with a detailed email on how to set up an account etc.
Commbank replied a couple of days later with a very detailed but demanding form
ANZ eventually replied a couple of weeks later with an… Continue

Looks like we're going to drop Adelaide from our trip and just head out along the Great Ocean Road to Port Fairy and back to Melbourne, taking a couple of days to do it.
Although I suppose we could drop a day off Sydney and Brisbane since it's unlikely we're going to live in either of the cities.
75 days and counting til we go.

My girlfriend and I are coming over in April/May to Oz to get our emigration visas stamped and to reconnoiter the various cities (Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and maybe Canberra) for housing, jobs etc
Melbourne is the only place we're going to pre-book. Once we get to Oz our dates are pretty flexible so we'll book hotels a couple of days prior to arriving in each city.
Any recommendations for reasonable hotels in decent areas etc gratefully received, budget… Continue
