Get Me Downunder

The Adventure Starts Here

Just wondering if anyone out there has any experience of Canberra or surrounding areas. My trade has just been added to the ACT skills list but I only know a relatively small amount of info about the area. Any helpful advice would be warmly welcomed.

Many Thanks, Mike Starkey

Hi - I am aiming to get a VISA by Feb and will be moving to Canberra as my other half is there. It isn't Sydney or Melbourne....but it is fairly uncluttered, has easy access to great views, nature parks, great walks and hikes, beautiful lakes (in my opinion) and all up, I like it. I love Bryson, but I remember reading the chapter on Canberra with a heavy heart before visiting and was then pleasantly surprised. It is purpose built...purpose built for easy living, nice open spaces between reasonable (although not exactly overwhelming) houses, lots of jobs, friendly locals etc. I loved Sydney but it was way too hectic for everyday life. In comparison with where I live now (Pompey) it seems great. CBD is bland but there are some decent bars, theatre, shops, restaurants and all with a pretty decent climate for a Pom to put up with :-)

I havent read his books to be honest and it is one mans opinion! The more I hear of it the more attracted I am, Low crime, low unemployment, low rent, better than average wage. Sounding good to me? Have a small family and just wondering about the quality of life I could offer them out there?

Bill Bryson isn't a fan as it is effectively a purpose built new town. Also quite a way from coast.

However quality of life is excellent - no traficc problems, lots of green space, good community feel. Surrounding Blue Mountains are stunning and it has good links to both Sydney and Melbourne.
