Get Me Downunder

The Adventure Starts Here

Relocation: Phil Down Under - Channel 4

Just to let everyone know there is a new series starting on Channel 4 at 8pm tonight that may be worth a look: "Property Guru Phil Spencer embarks on what feels like a blatant advert for the Australian Tourist Board in this new series, which helps out rain-soaked Brits wanting to start a new life in the land of sun, sand, sea and surf. To no one's surprise, his cliche-drenched searches uncover a lot more bricks for your buck in this opener but he's also grappling with people who want the dream, and, for some, oodles of space, room for a swimming pool and a beach down the road just ain't enough" Metro 22/01/2010. Well I'm going to watch anyway.

The show would have been better if the actual prices of properties were given rather than wildly inaccurate conversions to GBP. One of the few properties for which the actual price was quoted was a AU$35million mansion which was quoted as costing £15million when it's actually closer to £20million at current rates. So should we assume that all prices quoted are 75% of the actual figure? Of course the rate may have been correct when it was recorded (so when was that?) - but all the more reason to quote actual prices so you don't get these fluctuations. Despite that I'm sure I'll still watch the rest of the series.
