Hi Lynda!

So you've been waiting 6 months?

I'm not going to beat around the bush - it's a long wait! I'm sure you realise that. Are you using an agent? Have you had your application acknowledged by the authorities?

My application was acknowledged in August 2007. I was told by my agent to expect to wait up to 15 months. I heard nothing at all until September 2008 when I had to organise my medical, police check and sponsorship. I remember I had about 3 months to lodge this additional information. The police check and medical were dead easy to deal with (although more money to shell out). These two parts went through exceptionally quickly including the medical which I thought would take ages through our NHS, but it was with the authorities within a week of my having the medical! I used a clinic in Harley Street. The police check too was quick - there is fact a fast track option if you wanted to pay a few more pounds!

The sponsorship part was out of my hands as that has to be dealt with by your son/daughter in Australia. This was slightly complicated and delayed for me as my daughter is not working at the moment as she had her first baby in July. The official from CentreLink was quite offhand with her when she made the initial contact and said how could she be expected to sponsor me if she wasn't working! Anyway my daughter's partner stepped in even though he was not included in my initial application! They had to lodge $10,000 with the authorities (of course I transferred this to them and they had to then transfer to CentreLink - rather labourious, but I believe the money has to be seen to come from the sponsor!). At this stage I am slightly confused as to how long the money is held, but they do add interest!

Within a day or so of the expiry date for all this info I heard from the authorities that they wanted the final payment from me - at this stage you know you're on to a winner although of course they warn you not to get too excited. I was told at the begining that once they ask for this you're in - what's the point of asking otherwise?!

On December 16th 2008 I got the word that I was in and you can imagine how excited I was!

You have to then get your passport stamped. You can send it by registered post, but as I had waited so long and spent so much money I went in person the the High Commission in London. It took about 5 minutes - I cried!

One thing I would say Lynda - and this is the only thing that got me through - is give yourself realistic goalposts and try not to get anxious! Also try not to listen to well-wishers who keep asking Why? Why? Why?!

So that's it! I'm set to go!

My daughter is expecting another baby in May so I can't wait to get there. Unfortunately their house isn't big enough for me and they're moving from Mackay sometime within the next year. She is urging me not to go until the expiration is my visa validation is nearly up - I can't wait that long!

I think I'll just have to take the plunge and go out there and hope for the best. Fortunately I sold my property before the crunch hit so I don't have that worry!

Where abouts do you hope to settle? What's your line of work?

I've done this all on my own and there have been some very black times - keep focussed! Please feel free to contact me at any time if you need some encouragement!

Good luck and best wishes - you'll get there!
